Cyber Security
Never display any personal information that could be used to find you in the real, off-line, world, for example, your full real name, home address, or phone numbers. You should also be aware that individually innocuous pieces of information, such as, your school name, suburb, position on a sporting team, awards won, occupation, and similar, when combined could lead to someone being able to identify you in the real world.

Password
Your password is ciphered (a one-way hash) so that it is secure. However, it is recommended that you do not reuse the same password across a number of different websites. Your password is the means of accessing your account at Samurai Kids, so please guard it carefully, you should not let anybody else use your login details or account. Under no circumstance will anyone affiliated with Samurai Kids, phpBB or another 3rd party, legitimately ask you for your password. Should you forget your password for your account, you can use the “I forgot my password” feature provided by the phpBB software. This process will ask you to submit your user name and your e-mail, then the phpBB software will generate a new password to reclaim your account.

Information Samurai Kids Collects ("Member Information")

Member Provided Information
You will be required to provide to Samurai Kids what is generally called "personally identifiable" information (including a username, password, email address, and date of birth) when you register as a Member. In addition, you may choose to post certain information to your public "profile" on Samurai Kids such as your general location, interests, occupation, web site URLs, IM addresses, and comments. In most cases, you have the option of what information in your account is publicly displayed. Furthermore, within your account, you have the option to opt-in or opt-out of automatically generated e-mails from the phpBB software

"Cookies" Information
When you visit Samurai Kids, we may send one or more cookies, small text files containing a string of alphanumeric characters, files that are downloaded on to your computer’s web browser temporary files. The first two cookies just contain a user identifier (hereinafter “user-id”) and an anonymous session identifier (hereinafter “session-id”), automatically assigned to you by the phpBB software. A third cookie may be created once you have browsed topics within Samurai Kids and is used to store which topics have been read, thereby improving your user experience.You can choose not to receive these cookies or to remove previously set cookies (see the settings and “Help” file of the particular internet browser you are using for the way to modify your cookie settings). However, if you choose not to receive cookies or delete them certain functionality, such as automatic login, will not be available

"Automatically Collected" Information
When you visit Samurai Kids and participate in forums we may automatically record certain information from your web browser and internet connection. This automatic collection is done by the phpBB software we use with no further manual intervention. The "automatically collected" information may include your Internet Protocol address ("IP Address"), web browser type, the pages you view on our site, and the dates and times that you visit Samurai Kids.

Personal Messages (PMs)
PMs sent to other Samurai Kids Members using the board software are stored unencrypted in the site’s database and can be accessed by administrative staff of Samurai Kids when deemed necessary to investigate possible abuses of the system or risks to Members.

The Way Samurai Kids Uses Information

Public Display
When you choose to add information to your public profile on Samurai Kids, you will post, at your option, certain personal information that may be publicly displayed to other Members and visitors to Samurai Kids.

Member Contact
We will use your email address, without further consent, for administrative purposes such as sending you account activation and "welcome" emails, notifying you of major Samurai Kids updates, for customer service purposes, to address copyright infringement issues, or to contact you regarding any Samurai Kids activities in which you are presently participating.

Improving Services
Samurai Kids uses the information that we collect to operate, maintain, enhance, and provide to you all of the features and services found on Samurai Kids, to understand the usage trends and preferences of our Members, to improve the way Samurai Kids works and looks, and to create new features and functionality

Improving Functionality
Samurai Kids uses "automatically collected" information and "cookies" information to:
  • remember your information so that you will not have to re-enter it during your visit or the next time you visit Samurai Kids, such as the “Log me on automatically each visit” function;
  • monitor aggregate site usage metrics such as total number of visitors and pages viewed; and
  • track your submissions, such as posted comments to Samurai Kids.

When Samurai Kids Discloses Information

Limits of Disclosure

Samurai Kids does not share your personally identifiable information with other organisations with the following exceptions.

  • Samurai Kids may disclose some types of Member Information to certain affiliated companies or other businesses or persons who provide web site hosting, maintenance and security services, fulfill orders, offer certain functionality, help improve our site and create new site features. We require that these parties process such information in compliance with this Privacy Notice, we authorise only a limited use of such information, and we require these parties to use appropriate confidentiality measures.
  • Samurai Kids may disclose Member Information if required to do so by law or in the good-faith belief that such action is necessary to comply with state and federal laws of Australia or the USA, or respond to a court order, judicial or other government subpoena, or warrant. We may make such disclosures, in some cases, without providing Members notice.
  • Samurai Kids also reserves the right to disclose Member Information that we believe, in good faith, is appropriate or necessary to take precautions against liability; protect Samurai Kids from fraudulent, abusive, or unlawful uses; to investigate and defend ourselves against any third-party claims or allegations; to assist government enforcement agencies; to protect the security or integrity of Samurai Kids; and to protect the rights, property, or personal safety of our Members or other persons.

Your Choice

Non Disclosure of "Personal Information"
You may, of course, decline to share your personally-identifiable information with Samurai Kids, in which case you will not be able to participate in many Samurai Kids activities. You may update, correct, or delete most of your Member account information and email subscription preferences at any time by going to the User Control Panel section of Samurai Kids. You can request the removal of your personal information, but you should be aware that we may not delete all your posted comments to Samurai Kids. However, we will change the Member Information so that it will not be linked to you.

Our Commitment to Data Security

Data Security
Samurai Kids uses commercially reasonable physical, managerial, and technical safeguards to preserve the integrity and security of Member Information. We cannot, however, ensure or warrant the security of Member Information collected by Samurai Kids, and you transmit such information at your own risk. Once we receive your Member Information, Samurai Kids makes commercially reasonable efforts to ensure the security of our systems. However, please note that this is not a guarantee that such information may not be accessed, disclosed, altered, or destroyed by breach of any of our physical, technical, or managerial safeguards.

Notification of Breach
If Samurai Kids learns of a security systems breach, then we may attempt to notify you electronically so that you can take appropriate protective steps. Samurai Kids may post a notice on Samurai Kids if a security breach occurs

International Visitors

Applicable Laws
Samurai Kids is hosted in the United States but backups of the data are held in Australia. If you are visiting from the European Union, or other regions with laws governing data collection and use that may differ from U.S. or Australian law, please note that you are transferring your personal data to the United States and Australia and by providing your personal data you consent to that transfer.

This Privacy Notice may be revised periodically without further notice to you and this will be reflected by the "last modified" notice below. Please revisit this page to stay aware of any changes. In general, we only use your personal information in the manner described in the Privacy Notice in effect when we received that personal information. Our Commitment to Children's Privacy

Children's Online Privacy Protection Act
Protecting the privacy of young children is especially important. If you are the parent of a child who is covered by the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and Rule, that is a child under the age of 13 years, you can review the child's personal information, ask to have it deleted and refuse to allow any further collection or use of the child's information.
